Jaret Martens' Eating Sarah: Where asking WHY can get you eaten!

Pages:
250 (estimated)
Synopsis:
Ever since Sarah was young, all she could dream about was participating in The Hunt -- a monthly event in which her people sneak into the nearby cities and villages to gather food. And in Sarah's world, the food they feast on most is human flesh.

In the deep forests of the Rocky Mountains, Sarah lives in a community of man-eaters. With Fall ending and hunger running rampant, Sarah and her cannibalistic community are forced to change the rules of their Hunt. And with these changes come new risks. When her first Hunt ends in catastrophe, and one of her only friends is lost, Sarah is sentenced to work in the slaughter shack.

Among the dead and dying, Sarah is introduced to Troy: a man she knows she will be forced to kill. As her life crumbles around her, her feelings for Troy grow, along with the knowledge that, if anyone discovers her secret, she will find herself in his place.

Boundaries are pushed, allegiances broken, and the very question of what it means to be human is called into play.

The Review:
One of the most disturbing, skin crawling reads I've read in years!

Sarah just followed the rules. That was all she'd ever known--eating people. It wasn't as bad as you think it is, or that's what her normal was anyway. Then, accusations start flying and she's caught in the cross fire.

Imagine yourself in a world where you hunt for your survival. I mean really, you have to hunt to live. Sarah was so excited when the age was lowered and she would be able to capture her first human to eat! Nothing about her first hunt went as she planned it in her mind for so many years. Death, family and friends murdered. The town they were hunting came for retaliation.

Her parents suddenly were monsters, she had only thought she knew. Her whole life was turned upside down in less than a week. Friends dying, council members corrupted; her world became a living nightmare. Escaping wasn't an option, and now she was sentenced to the slaughter house.

I don't want to give too much away, but a page turner to say the very least! I was revolted and intrigued at the same time. I wanted to stop reading, but couldn't put it down! The first work of fiction I've read about cannibalism and I'm blown away! I had never thought of NEEDING to eat humans as a means of sole survival.

Martens describes things so well, you can hear the popping of flesh, the smell of the rotting bodies. This is by far one of the most interesting reads I've came across. A job well done!

Rainy Kaye's Summoned--Not your ordinary jinn.

Pages: 237 (approximately)

Synopsis:
Twenty-three year old Dimitri has to do what he is told—literally. Controlled by a paranormal bond, he is forced to use his wits to fulfill unlimited deadly wishes made by multimillionaire Karl Walker.
Dimitri has no idea how his family line became trapped in the genie bond. He just knows resisting has never ended well. When he meets Syd—assertive, sexy, intelligent Syd—he becomes determined to make her his own. Except Karl has ensured Dimitri can’t tell anyone about the bond, and Syd isn’t the type to tolerate secrets.

Then Karl starts sending him away on back-to-back wishes. Unable to balance love and lies, Dimitri sets out to uncover Karl’s ultimate plan and put it to an end. But doing so forces him to confront the one wish he never saw coming—the wish that will destroy him.

A dark twist on genie folklore, SUMMONED follows a reluctant criminal as he unravels the mystery of the paranormal bond controlling him.

SUMMONED is represented by Rossano Trentin of TZLA.

Review:
This really isn't fair. To write a review on this book. From the very beginning this book drags you in and you enter this love hate relationship immediately! The very first sentence sets the tone for the whole book. Kaye did a wonderful job creating the character, and Dimitri doesn't disappoint in his sarcastic demeanor.

Let's face it, no one likes to be told what to do, or how to do it. Now, take that and imagine being bonded to someone and FORCED to do their dirty work? No life, no family, just a multimillionaire who wants to keep you and who you truly are a secret. Do not be misguided, he's not doing it for your safety, he doesn't want to give you up. Sick, right?

I couldn't get over how much you hated liking Dimitri. You weren't supposed to like him, or feel sorry for him. He does unspeakable things, has hurt numerous people; he's the bad guy. Or is he? Would he still be the bad guy if he wasn't under this bond? That is up for you as the reader to decide, it's pretty self explanatory.

Fall in love? This is no easy feat to the ordinary, imagine being a genie trying to fall in love. No promise of a normal life, or even a normal relationship. Secrets, and lies--not by choice, but you're wished to not divulge any information about yourself. I cannot imagine how sad Dim must have been, and enter Syd.

Life falls apart, or does it fall into place? Syd is hot, and Dim wants her. Plot twists and turns keep trying to keep them in a constant mode of disaster. It's easy to like Syd, she is edgy and mysterious. Was that the lure that hooked Dim? She isn't one for secrets, and Dim doesn't want to keep all his secrets to himself.

Come on, get sucked in to Summoned. You'll love the ride, and maybe have your jaw smack the ground a few times (I know mine did)!

Michelle Frost's First Light--A World Where Color Is Banned

Book: First Light
Author: Michelle Frost
Synopsis:
On a world without hope, where life is fading and colour is a crime; three people living very different lives are about to have their perception of reality shattered. As deceptions are torn away, and ancient secrets brought to light, they each must struggle to find the missing pieces of the puzzle... pieces that will reveal their true destiny.
Idrith, bitter and trapped in a life he never chose, is the first to discover his own fear-filled mystery. Obsessed with finding the truth behind the lies, he turns to the one person he has always tried to avoid - the mysterious pilgrim, Harmion.
Aztar's military promotion comes with an unexpected burden that threatens the entire Northerner regime. It seems that their only hope may lie in the hands of someone he was raised to think of as his inferior. Each day they struggle together to find a solution, but at night Aztar struggles alone as the secret he's hidden since childhood returns to torment him.
Daen was allowed to grow up unrestricted and far better educated than normal for a Northerner woman. Now her father's health is failing and the running of their family estate lies in her hands. Knowing that desperate situations call for courageous action, she is about to take a step that will change her life forever.

Our Thoughts:
Imagine a world where color isn’t allowed, where even the thought of color is considered evil.  Imagine for a minute you’re in a different world, living under the rule of fear, where anything you do or say could put you in jail or even put to death!

This is the world that Frost created for her readers, and it’s a good one. She took the time to take you and wrap you in this world where you find yourself making every day, real world connections to the book and your own reality. This world is real, it’s brought to life in your mind, and you end up despising everything about it.

Three main characters interact with one other character. Being from different parts of Sindorous, their interactions not only push the story along separately but also collectively with the help of Harmion. Several people in this book you will love to hate. Betrayal and deceit are common; lies become the norm. Harmion is no exception to this.

A job well done by Frost! From the beginning of the book, which takes a while to set up, you begin to see things differently than you thought you would. And, by the end, you’re left wanting more.  Things left undone, there’s not a happy ending yet for those in Sindorous. Can Idrith, Daen, and Aztar work together and save the world in which they live?

Book Spotlight: Together Apart by Natalie Martin

Book:

Former Lad-About-Town, Adam, has found the girl of his dreams and wants to settle down.
For fifteen years, Sarah avoided commitment, until she met Adam.
A marriage proposal should lead to a happy engagement, but Sarah has a secret - and she's willing to sacrifice her happiness to keep it.

Going through a break-up is hard enough, but having to live together afterwards is even worse, especially when it's a break-up neither person wants. For Adam, there are only three ways to deal with it - sex, drugs and alcohol. For Sarah, it's keeping her distance, closely guarding the lengths she's gone to in order to keep her secret safe.

And she succeeds, until Adam finds a box of her teenage diaries and sets out to discover the truth.

Soon enough, the delicate threads of Sarah's secret begin to unravel and when her first love is brutally murdered, her past and present collide in a way that makes it impossible to keep them apart.

Adam thought he knew everything about Sarah. He was wrong.

Author:

What do you want to know about me....well, I'm a lover of pretty much anything remotely artistic - music, books, art, video games (I class them as artistic!)

I love stories with a good twist and characters I can relate to, which is one of the reason I started writing in the first place - to create characters that people can identify with.

I've just hit the big 3-0 and am originally from Sheffield, now living in London and am a lover of all things French. I've just returned from a 4 month trip to India and Thailand, so I'm bursting at the seams with new book ideas!

Teaser:

Adam switched off the alarm on his phone as it started vibrating next to his head. He heard the shower running in the bathroom and slowly sat up, rubbing his neck. He’d spent the night lying on the lumpy sofa, drifting in and out of a twenty-four hour news channel before finally falling asleep to the latest bulletin about a war somewhere in the Middle East. He should have booked today off. Going back to the office the day after a holiday was always bad enough, but after the botched proposal and a crap night’s sleep, work was the last thing he was in the mood for. It wasn’t like it was a matter of life and death anyway, not like Sarah’s job. She did something important while he just managed luxury properties and pandered to people with more money than sense. Actually, he loved his job, but it didn’t suit his mood to admit it.
He yawned as he made his way to the kitchen and flicked on the kettle. When Sarah walked in with her dressing gown wrapped tightly around herself and a towel turban-like on her head, he handed her a cup.
‘I made you some coffee.’
‘Thanks.’
She slowly took a sip and leaned against the cooker. He watched as she ran her finger around the rim of the cup and bit down on her lip, a tell-tale sign she was thinking about something. He needed to say something to end the silence that was getting heavier by the second.
‘So, I think we need to talk.’
She nodded. ‘I know. I’ve been thinking. Your proposal . . . it made me realise that I can’t do this anymore.’
Adam drew his eyebrows together. ‘Do what?’
‘This. Us.’
His heart almost leapt right out of his throat, but his cheek twitched as he willed himself not to show it. He had to stay in control. ‘Are you serious?’
‘You don’t want to marry me, Adam. You can do a hell of a lot better than someone like me.’
‘Forgive me for being a bit dense here, but things were fine before. Are you seriously telling me you want to split up because I proposed?’
‘It’s not just that. There are things that I can’t explain but I can’t be with you, not anymore. It’s not fair on either of us.’
Her words hit him as hard as a punch to the gut, and she looked straight at him with tears filming her eyes. This couldn’t really be what she wanted. She might have said the words, but the trembling in her voice betrayed her. This was Sarah. She wasn’t a callous person. There was no way she’d throw away their relationship like it meant nothing.
‘I’m going to be late. I need to go,’ she said, putting her cup on the side before leaving the kitchen.
Then again, maybe she could.

A run down of my review process. . .

I only accept titles for review that personally appeal to me and will do my best to review them in a timely fashion. Several factors may impact how long it takes me to read and review, such as how much time I have available that month and how many other books are on my waiting-to-be-read list. I cannot promise a review on all books accepted, as I only finishing reading the books I enjoy the most. If I don't finish your book or review it, it is not saying anything bad about the author--it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Also, while you may have sent me your book, that doesn't mean I will blog it. There are thousands and thousands of books out there, and I really want to offer my readers the chance to indulge in what I consider some of the best. I am happy to send you an email of how I felt about your book, however, I reserve the right to post books that I feel are 3 stars and higher.

I understand that this may not be favorable for some, but this helps me sort through reviews, and still have time for family. Reviews will be read in the order in which they were accepted/received.

I look forward to hearing from you and working together!
